Hello,
I am brand new to photoshop, and am looking to learn it for the purpose of web design.
Can anyone please recommend some great books on the subject within the context of web design?
Thanks! |

If you are brand new, I'd suggest learning the basics before you try to go deeper into web design and such.
I always recommend the local library first, since it's free. A book on any version will teach you the basics.
There are also many resources available on the net, Google is your friend. |

Also, I forgot to mention that I'm not dead-set on needing a book. If anyone knows a great tutorial series on the net that would be even better. I've been googling some for the past 45 minutes, but it's hard to wade through what's good and bad when I don't really know what I'm looking for in the first place. If anyone knows some great tutorials that would be much appreciated! |

Well, that is the problem with tutorials on the web. They are seldom in any cohesive order and most all of them assume you have a a basic knowledge of PS, so they leave out many details which can be confusing for beginners. I don't know af any offhand that teach just the basics, most tutorials that I see are more advanced, and some are not very well done which can be even more confusing.
Frankly, a decent book from the library is the best way IMHO, that's the way I got started. |

@hawkeye: Thanks for the advice. I'm gonna take a look at library online in a moment when I get a chance. I'm hoping I can find something within the context of strictly web design.
I currently work as a software developer and have begun to wet my whistle in making websites in my spare time. I'm trying to learn a bit of everything to get by. Really I just want to get my hands dirty and start creating because you learn best from experience as opposed to reading. I was hoping to find a book/tutorial that takes a more hands on approach as opposed to being a reference guide if you know what I mean. I'd rather read a book that has you follow step by step in photoshop moving along with the lessons, as opposed to a book being one big API detailing all the features alphabetically [exaggerated to illustrate a point on certain books ].
I'll check my library online and cross reference it with reviews on amazon to see if I can find what I'm looking for. In the meantime, if anyone knows any hands on books, authors, etc to help narrow my search that'd be great. Thanks. |

I looked at the website which contains the books for every library in the city. Every single book on photoshop was checked out AND there are 6-10 requests pending per book. Ouch. Looks like I'm gonna have to splurge some money.
I searched amazon for "photoshop cs4 web" hoping to find some photoshop books related to web design, and not to photography. The first title
Adobe CS4 Web Workflows: Building Websites with Adobe Creative Suite 4"
jumped right out at me. The reviews were great, but when I read the product description every single chapter had something to do with DreamWeaver. I'm not sure if this is a good thing or a bad thing, as I will not be coding in coding in DreamWeaver.
Do you mind having a look and telling me what you think of this book for my purposes?
Also, I found some simple and short tutorials related to web design at pegaweb.com. This is more or less exactly what I'm looking for. Do you think this book would be good at giving me what I want?
Thanks again

I've decided to do with
"Adobe Photoshop CS4 Classroom in a Book" - by The Adobe Creative Team
it sounds like exactly what I want to start out on. Has anyone hear personally read this book or heard anything about it?
From there, I think I'll pick up "The missing manual" which sounds like a good in depth reference guide. |

I'v been using Clasroom in a book in conjunction with a class. Yes, I think it's good and also I think it's a pretty standard book to use to learn the product.
I work through each tutorial with the sample images and then I try to do something similar with something of my own to reinforce it.
Some of us do need books!

Chris please dont limit yourself by thinking of photography and graphics as two seperate entities when they are both part of the same animal. A lot of the things that apply to one will apply to both and if you are looking to get into web design then digital imagery will be a huge part of that. To learn about one without the other is like learning half a language, you will get by but still wont understand everything you hear. _________________ The only limitation is my imagination. |
