My high school child was given an old version of PS (CS to be exact) i believe it was released in 2003? Nonetheless its never been used and it was free. Having no experience with this type of software, any suggestions on the best instructional books or other tutorial resources?

Hi duanep and welcome to the forum. Book recommendation will normally depend on which direction people wish to take Photoshop. I would normally say if possible complete online tutorials and resources and when they are more comfortable in the basics perhaps then research specific book titles.

Here's one to get you started, although there's plenty of others out there too Beginners tutorials

hi,
with any program one of the first things i do when i get it is just go in and find out where things are located (tools menues and what in the menus etc.. .. .... those thing i don't don't understand i write write and research later... the main point you start getting familiar...

then i start with using the basic tools and experiement withthem using various tutorials....
there a thougsands of tutorials on various techniques and how to use tools and other features... so don't overlook that wealtho of info.

at some point i do start to look at books, for specialty areas... ie design or retouching, etc...

a couple of links for starters...
1. this link addresses tools a quick explanation and if you click on the left side a little bit more thorough explanations
http://www.itechies.net/tutorials/photoshop/index.php?pid=tools
2. similar to the link above but still very helpfull
http://simplephotoshop.com/photoshop_tools/

3. nice list of tutorials there all easy.. although they concentrate on doing things to cars.. smiling.. however... what you lear from them is directly applicable to projects.....
http://digimods.co.uk/tutorials/tutorials.htm

4. now this group of tutorials most of them are relatively very simple ... good to practice with.
http://www.myjanee.com/tutorials.htm

5. main point with these is layers and layers masks very important to understand.....
http://www.scribd.com/doc/39501596/Photoshop-Introduction-Layers-Filters-and-Tools
http://www.ehow.com/how_4775196_using-layer-mask-photoshop-cs.html

this covers layers and layers pallet
http://www.photoshopcafe.com/tutorials/layers/intro.htm

i think that enough for now...lol ... if you run into difficuty don't hesitate to ask... that what were here for...
