Hey everyone, I am working for a client in creating a website and they had someone else create a logo for them. The guy who created the logo has used drop shadows on the fonts for the logo. I am trying to create a png file or something I can use so that way I can just put up the logo onto the website and have the back ground color show up.
I've tried to use magic eraser, wand tool, played with the tolerances. However, the shadowing of the font seems to be messing up things and even the text around the star that says "strengthening Workforces" always seems to lose it's boldness when I try to paintbucket the area just with one click and on a tolerance level or 20-30.
What do I do to work around this?

You have to use a desaturated inverted duplicate of the image as a layer mask if that makes any sense.
You going to have problems because its a jpg file and contains artifacts.

I get like a broken record, but maybe a case for a blend-if command to remove the white.
I hadn't thought of the above method, tried it by duplicating image and desaturating, then applying calculations on two channels set to multiply. It produced nice results that could easily be used a mask/channel. In this case it was a little trickier, but only because JPEG artefacts have introduced grey blocks on this version.

Why not just get rid of the shadows entirely and make them again yourself with Layer Styles? IMHO, saves a lot of pesky job and efforts...

...or get the guy who designed the logo to provide a png/gif from the original? Shouldn't that be part of the logo design service (unless the client expected to always use a white background)?

... ah, modern times! The logo guy and the web guy working together would be a process of "empowering employees" in order to "strengthen the workforce" and thereby "revolutionise business" for the client...

hi,
have you tried using blend if?
note duplicate your yourlayer and turn off the eye on the original layer... ..
1. go to your your "add layer style"
2. click blending options
3. ussing blend if grey....
4. on the "this layer scale" on the right side triangle
just slide that to the left the white will dissappear...
note: do a alt click on the right righttriangle and it will split giving you more control/sensitivity you might say...

Thanks for the replies,
Can you explain more on the desaturate and invert method. I gone and did that but after the invert then what? And how do I get the color back.
And yes, so everyone knows I requested a PNG file from the client to begin with but somehow they think I can work with just a jpeg.....so I requested a PNG file again. Let's see what happens.

No offence meant, it's just that asking for the PNG is genuinely the first thing that I would have tried if it were me. I would also be concerned for my client because they may want to use this logo in many ways which could be limited by only having a jpg.
I'm guessing that what aueios means is that you would go to the channels panel and control-click to select only the non-white stuff? This selection can then be used on the original layer (make a copy of the original layer before desaturating and inverting. Though I think the shadow would always be there? Sorry if I've misunderstood.
