I don't understand why you don't just match the big blue square instead., because that's much easier.
After that all you need is to tune both color at the same time to get the blue you want.

My problem is that I cannot use a gradient overlay on the head layer, and apply a clipping mask for the teeth.

Yes you can, just clip the gradient layer (or gradient adjustment layer) too.

Don't jump into any projects when you just have Photoshop for two weeks, that's like trying to fly without ground school.

Get a good book or cheap video (VTC for example)

Delete the shortcut and manually create a new one, that should fix it.
