I hear so many things about photoshop and altering photos so that it gets blamed for photos which may not be a true photo.
My question is what photoshop program should I start with?
I have nothing at the present. I run XP Pro for PC's. I have a 1.6 AMD K6 processor, plenty of virtual mem, and also physical mem....
I attempt to purchase something, but don't fully understand since there are so many products out there.
I need recommendations on what to buy.
Thanks.....johnlgor

Hey johnlgor,
Welcome to the site!
There's 2 variations of Photoshop available on the market.
There's one entitled simply 'Photoshop' where the latest version is CS3. Photoshop is mostly for professional use, or advanced use in the hands of a home user. It's extremely powerful but expensive.
The other is entitled 'Photoshop Elements' and is a available primarily for the home enthusiast. It's still a great piece of software that has many of the features and powers available that you'll find in the full version. Because of this, it's something like a 5th of the price of the full version.
My advice? For anybody starting out who haven't used Photoshop before, perhaps because they are reletively new to image editing - go for Elements. Once you've mastered it, you'll find it easy to update to Photoshop because at heart it's the same piece of software - just organised slightly differently and with some of the 'advanced' features turned off.
Of course, if price is no issue, go for Photoshop CS3, but if it is, then try Elements and upgrade when/if necessary.
