A) Good free 3D modeling program
B) Good tutorials on how to make 3D models.

well i don't think that there are any GOOD free 3d modeling progs out there (correct me if i'm wrong)

but you can find a lot of trial version,
i'll name some progs of wich i know you can find trials and if you like em you can buy or optain them trough another way ( like a birthday gift Big Wink )

Lightwave 3D http://newtek.com/
3D Studio Maxhttp://www.discreet.com/
alias maya http://www.alias.com/eng/products-services/index.shtml

there a lot of other progs out there like: luxigon modo 102 (looks awesome)
but there's no trail for that yet,
and also other progs i don't know very well so you'll have to google for them: houdini, bryce, softimage, rhino and so on and so on! :P

also here's a site where there seem to be some freeware progs http://fraktali.849pm.com/graphpro.html but they will probably not be so good as the above, again i advise you to google for it or altavista yahoo for it :P

at the moment i'm using lightwave 3d 8.01
and although i like it alot, it is very hard to learn (nothing like photoshop, where you can atleast try Big Wink )

hope i didn't over do it here Blush

Maya has a version of it's product for free (Maya Unlimited) but it has limited rendering capabilities.

Discreet has a program called G-MAX(???? I forget the name offhand) that is a pared down version intended for low polygon modelling (games etc....)

If you're into character animation and you don't feel like forking over a couple thousand bucks, Animation Master from Hash is the way to go. Awesome program. Has its drawbacks, of course, but it's pretty cool.

OH BOY OH BOY OH BOY! do I have a deal for you!
you need to try Wings3D, available as a free open-source dowlnoad for windows, mac, or linux from http://www.wings3d.com/

This is an amazing product, definately suitable for character modelling. Excellent features include tweak mode which moves verticies in a vicinity "magnetically". When combined with virtual mirror, you can very easily make a rough face , then enter tweak and work on either side while the other side just does the same thing. I've modelled (poorly) in 3ds max for about 4 years and I actuallt prefer wings. Seriously try it try it it awesome. PM me or something if you have any questions.

Their website does contain a few beginning tutorials.

Ohb yeah, and Wings does UVW maps very quickly, easily, and accurately.

I'd use Maya Learning Edition, since Maya is the leading 3D software package currently in the movie/animation industry. You could try 3D Studio if you like Game Design.

And if your looking for a completely free solution, I suggest Blender3D, http://blender.org I believe.

I know of a good free 3d modeling program. It's not expensive like Maya or the other programs others have mentioned. However, it's pretty easy to learn once you get the basics down. I've tried it myself. Here is a link to the site and it's software is always being updated to a better version.

http://www.blender3d.org

Check it out, it's a good program if you're looking for something free for 3d modeling.

You can go to deviantart.com, and do a search for "blender". You'll find quite a bit of good stuff done with it. Blender will render your scenes and animate too.
