I want to change PART of a picture from a round item, to an octagonal item, like for instance, a kid kicking a ball but make the ball into the octagonal shape.
So I think I would use lasso tool to define a PORTION of the circular image, then simply push inside that circle to straighten it out, and do that for 8 sides of the round image.
Is this possible?
Thanks if you think you know how.

There are two ways of doing it that I can think of and both begin with the same steps. I will use your example of the kid kicking a ball.

1. Use the rectangular marquee tool to draw a square round the ball finishing at the edges
2. Right click the selection and select layer via copy (after this step you may want to turn off the bottom layer to make things easier)
3. Ctrl + click the layer thumbnail of the new layer to load the selection
4. Go to menu Select > Transform selection
5. Hold down shift an rotate the selection 45 degrees to the right or left and press enter on the keyboard
6. Go back the the menu Select > Inverse then press the delete on the keyboard.

You now have a layer in the shape of an octagon containing all of the ball and some small pieces of grass in the corners. From here you can either use the transform tool or liquify filter. I will explain the liquify filter because the results seem to require less tweaking compared to the transform method.

1. Make sure your octagon layer is selected in the layers panel
2. Go to menu Filter> Liquify
3. In the mask options there are 5 icons of circles overlapping each other. Click the one on the very left (called replace selection) and click transparency.
4. Now use to forward warp too to push the ball into the corners of your octagon. Try to do this evenly as it can make the ball look odd if you go wild with it.
5. Once done, click OK to exit the filter and save changes. You now have a 8 sided ball and can turn on the bottom layer if it is off from before.

Hope that helps you accomplish what you are after. One thing i noticed is that the ball can look a bit strange as the eye expects an 8 sided ball to look like a type of polyhedron however the face of the ball will still appear round. Anyway good luck.
