Ok, so I’ve got a problem here that has been driving me crazy! I’m hoping someone might be able to help. I have numerous files from drum scanned film, and nearly half of them have corrupt previews. They are 16-bit tif files (some RGB some grayscale, ranging in size from 100mb to 1+gb), that came from a Howtek Hi-Resolve 8000 running on Mac OS9. The files open perfectly fine on either PC or Mac (I’m on PC), though no matter what I do they won’t display the preview in bridge, lightroom, or windows explorer. Some files display fine, others come up with weird and seemingly random patterns, others simply display the generic tif logo. I have no doubt that the problem lies with the drum scanner, or at the very least the ancient Mac running it, my only question is can they be fixed? I’ve tried switching the file type from tif to psd, as well as pasting the image into a new document, unfortunately neither made a difference.

See attached image for an example

Any tips or suggestions?

Thanks!

hi,
I am no expert in this, but it may not be corrupted it just the wrong program to open them...

when it comes to tiff files there alot of different flavors.... some used single bit compression or group 4 fax or what used alot to day is lzw compression ..... but there many other flavors...!! I am thinking that since a older program was used , the current programs that your having problem opening that particular flavor of tiff..

now i generally keep 3 or 4 programs that can open a wide variety of tif files.... and what I some times do use one of my graphic converter programs that open it fine I will then I''ll reconvert the file to tiff.. using lzw compression or just save as uncompress tiff ... ..! why don't you try the free converters like from irfanview.com or xnview.com ...!!

note: by any chance the ones you can't, are those files sizes the ones above 1 gig size? i wonder if that related to your issue...
