I have seen numerous videos where the artist will get a piece of line art, and then picks one part to color e.g. hair. After they are done coloring they do a command somehow that eliminates any color that goes outside the borders of the line art.
For example check at about 10 second in this video.

I hear that it may be from creating a clipping mask, but I havnt had any luck. Would anyone please shed some light? [/url]

When you have an object on a layer which is otherwise blank and you can clip the layer above it, then whatever is on the layer above will only be visible where there are pixels.
The shortcut for a clipping layer is: ctrl+alt+G
