... being a lazy beggar I always grab a good looking brush when I see one, but more and more I find that newly installed brush sets won't open because they aren't compatible with my version ( 7 ... well I'm old as well! ).

Since they are only ABR files why can't the various versions read them? and, more importantly is there a way of getting the program to read abr's made with later versions?
