How do you cut a specific piece of an image into a new one?

I know masking is supposed to be a good way of doing this, and I have used it, but I have to say for really intricate poieces it can be a pain.

magic wand everytime for me, you have to play with the settings, but that in conjuction with lassoo can work better on very intricate pieces, lassooo to get the bulk, and magic wand to get rid of the bits left over.
