how do you insert an image onto a uv map of a piece of armor

ok i made a armor in blender for a game (skyrim) i have a picture of reptile scales i would like on my armor,using the uv maps of my armor is there a way to add the reptile image onto my uv map of my armor.i'm new to photoshop so a step by step process would be perfect please help

hi,
first of all it would be really nice to see the images in question... so many time the image needs to be seen in order to determine what the best route let along try to give a step by step on how to do something...

now my first thoughts is maybe use the displacement map, there ton of tutorials and this is just one.... i hope i guess right on what might work on your image.

note: displacements maps, in my opinion work bestt where light and dark edges/areas ....

it didn't work using displacement maps,i used overlay and that didn't seem to do nothing
