How do you put in a colored background?

I assume there are several ways. What allows for adding patterns as well?

imagemaker, Just add a new layer & go up to Layer
on the drop down menu, Fill Layer, & you can fill it with
a solid color an so forth.

Its so simple, just change the background/foreground color to your desired one. Then press Ctrl+backspace to fill the layer with background color and press Alt+backspace to fill the layer with foreground color.
