How do I make the background of a photo transparent so when it is imported to Illustrator it does not appear with as an image in a white box?

FILE/NEW

When the 'window' comes up asking for size etc... you'll see a pull down menu labeled background contents select transparent and then copy and paste you image into it and you now have a transparent background.

Thanks Moondog - when I save the image - i lose the transparentcy of the background.

to retain the transparent background, you have to save as a .gif .... let me know if that doesn't work.

I have PS 7.0 - .gif is not an option?

did you try flattening the image first and then seeing if you can save as .gif? I had 7.0 at one time and don't remember that I could NOT save to .gif.

I'm not saying you're wrong ... so please don't take it that way. I just always thought I could save as .gif
