I have a quick question guys, and i shall give you following simple example to see what i am trying to achieve

I have created a black rectangle shape with the rectangular shape tool. Now i have selected the star custom shape tool (red colour), and placed a star over the black rectangle, in the top right hand corner. I have placed half of this red star over the black rectange and half of it outside the rectangle.

How do i get rid of the excess red star outside of the black rectangle, so i am only left with a partial red star inside the black rectangle.

Hope you guys know what i am talking about lol :-)

many thanks in advance

hi idad

unfortunately thats not what i want

i have three layers, one layer is the white background, second layer is the black rectange shape, and the third layer is the big red star

the big red star is placed over the black rectangle, but the big red star is bigger than the rectangle, so it overlaps. All i want is to delete the excess part of the star that overlaps the black rectangle, so i am only left with remaining start within the black rectangle.

Apply a clipping mask to the red star layer.
(On a mac, it's Cmd+Opt while hovering in between the layers.)

You don't need the pen tool, it will work with shapes. These are all made with the shape tool, and as you can see the clipping layers work.

Sorry about the confusion. Probably should have not displayed the points.

They were done with the shape tool and converted to vector masks. All shapes have "points" that can be accessed by the pen tool.
