Hi Stoops, welcome to the forums. Sorry for your loss.

This is about the best I could do with the low resolution image provided. Maybe some other kind soul wants to have a go at it. Mike?

I'm having a bash, hopefully not too long - got a few things to do first though, and I'm guessing this image isn't as easy as a fill flash, or a shadow highlight fix.

Great job on the retouch though Frank, only thing missing from being outstanding is a slight magenta caste on the left, it could be corrected with a selective colour adj. layer with a mask painted back in.

My view really is; that as a candid photo it might be best in the original shadow state. However in the digital age I suppose that it does no harm to alter it ;)

ps: do you want the lips altered or as they are? (there is a blemish/swelling in one part).

Here's my effort. On closer inspection I should have reduced the shadow on the ear and neck, but.... time and tide and all that jazz.

As intimated by Frank the JPEG artefacts are a little prohibitive. Anyway I hope this is kind of what you wanted though :)

If you want the full version just shout out and I will PM you so you can give me your email.

Nicely done Mike, I knew you could do it :)

I think I'll have to recalibrate my monitor because I don't see the magenta cast on my end. Thanks for the heads up.
