I am using PS CS3 and I am having difficulties staying within the black lines of the line art. I use the magnetic lasso tool, as with just a regular lasso the results are even worse. Once I have my selection I am doing edit->fill to get the color I want for the given location.

Anyone have any tips how I can fix this, or at least easily erase the colors that go outside the black pencil borders.

For instance the blue in the jeans bleeds outside the black line boundary.

Thank you.

You could always finish colouring your image, and then at the end just choose a hard-edged eraser brush and erase the colours outside of the lines. This might be the easiest way.

Or, make sure all your pencil lines are 'closed'- kind of like a line drawing in a black and white colouring book. Then, choose the magic wand tool and click anyhwere on the outside of your lines... PS3 should now select all the negative space. If not, then your lines aren't 'closed' yet- zoom in and search for where the selection is leaking into your pencil drawing.

When your selection is successful, go to 'Select->Inverse' and this should reverse the selection so it's selected only your line drawing. Then you can paint without going outside the lines.

If you want really accurate selections learn to use the pen tool, it will pay off in the long run.

I agree with hawkeye. The Pen tool is not the easiest tool to learn, but the time spent doing so pays big dividends. Also, regardless of the method used to make a selection, any of them can be fine tuned by making a few touch-ups in Quick Mask mode. I do that a lot :-)

In this instance I would use a channel selection method to boost the black lines and then make my amendments. If you surf the channels for the largest contrast between the light and dark and then use Levels/Curves adjustment layers and or Contrast adjustment to bring out the lines.

You could try altering this to suit your needs :

Of course learning the Pen Tool will always be an asset.
