...I know it sounds stupid but deleting layers one by one is driving me crazy. help please.

you can link the layers that you want to delete together, in the layer window, click the little box on the right side of the layers and a chain will appear in the box. then go to

Layer-Delete-linked layers

BUT..make sure that you do not have a layer that you want to keep highlighted, if so that layer will delete also.
