I'm trying to create or simulate a back light as highlights for a portrate photo. When the picture was taken there is no back light and the picture looks very flat. How or what are some of the methods use to creat back light as highlights for a portrait photo? Help is much appreciated.

well....just play around with it like crazy....you never know what you can accomplishing by experimenting. to make it not so flat you can play around with the contrast. also try playing with the "exposure" etc. You can find these tools in "Image"-"Adjusments" (AdobePS)

as for the back lighting....you could try dodging your background. On your tools pallet on the mid-left side(CS2) there should be a little hand or tack looking like thing. If the little hand is showing click and hold then go over to the "tack". The tack is the dogde tool I believe. change your brush size at the top. click on your background. It'll make it lighter. Play around. Just experiment-don't be skerd!
