Hi im new to photoshop and have a quick question. When changing the blending modes of a layer ( say to color burn or soemthing) does that blending mode effect all layers below the current layer or just the one immediately below? If its all then how can you set it so it only effects the one below? |

Hi there
Changing the blending mode of a layer effects the way it interacts with the layer directly below. It doesn't effect layers that are further down the stack unless you're changing the blending mode of an adjustment layer.
Hope this helps _________________ Matt

Thanks a lot for the quick reply, in regards to effects on layers below , how do you make it so an adjustment layer only effects the a certain layer and not all the ones beneath it? |

Hi there
You can create a clipping mask if you only want to effect the layer below the adjustment layer. This can be done in a number of ways-
*With the adjustment layer active, go to the Layer Menu and select Create Clipping Mask
*With the adjustment layer active, hit CTRL ALT G on the keyboard (CMD OPTION G on the Mac)
*Hold down the ALT (or OPTION) key and position the cursor between the adjustment layer and the one below it until you see the cursor change into a symbol (two circles with a small arrow). Now click and the top layer becomes clipped to the layer below it.
To release the clipping mask just reverse any of the previous 3 steps.
