How do I set the size of my photoshop canvas to ensure that anything I do will print in a 4X6 format with no cropping.
I did some real nice work on some wedding photos that looked great on the computer, but body parts were cut off in the printing of 4X6.
Thanks in advance |

Hi cgrasso1,
You can set the canvas size by going to Image>Canvas Size. This will crop part of the image if you're working with a different ratio so you might as well use the Crop tool. If you want to warp the current size into 6x4 then use the image size command (Image>Image Size).
Good luck _________________ Matt

Thank you for the reply. However, I set the image size to 4X6 and printed the photo that looks perfect on screen and it cropped half a head. I just don't see what else I can do.
I could post the image. |

You will have to crop the image yourself in PS to fit the desired pixel dimensions before printing, or the printer will obligingly print as much as it can fit into the canvas size at the current PPI, doing the cropping for you. And that is what you are seeing.
Canvas size is only part of the equation, and when it comes to printed output, not even the most important part. The canvas must be sized to have the correct aspect ratio, of course, but the actual output print size is determined by multiplying the image PPI settings times the desired dimensions in inches. So, for example, for a print at 300 DPI, measuring 4 x 6 printed inches, the pixel dimensions of the image would be (300 x 4 = 1200) x (300 x 6 = 1800), for pixel dimension settings (in the Image|Image Size dialog) of 1200W x 1800H.
If you set the PPI in the Image Size dialog to 300 PPI, and the Pixel Dimensions to 1200 x 1800, you will find that the Document Size shown in that dialog will automatically be 4" x 6". You must have Constrain Proportions turned on to prevent distortion (short, squat people, or long, skinny people).
If you find that you cannot set the necessary pixel dimensions with Constrain Proportions turned on, you know that you will need to crop the image to the correct aspect ratio first. You can use the H and W settings text boxes in the Crop Tool context toolbar to establish a crop box at the proper aspect ratio. |

I see the correction and positing in the Forum provided the answer. I'm guessing if I apply the math to all sizes, I should solve the issue. |
