Hi there i'm going to buy my girlfriend photoshop but am not sure which version to buy.
She loves her photography but is not a professional.
Am i spending too much money buying the Cs 4 or is it well worth the money.
Do i buy her lightroom then let her upgrade to cs4 if she likes??
Please help |

Hi nuge,
Good choice, any version of Photoshop will be an asset to your girlfriend!
Be aware though, there are 3 different Photoshop products on the market right now - Photoshop CS4, the professional level and very powerful image editor. Photoshop Elements 7 - A scaled down but still very able version of Photoshop designed for home users and hobbyists (a great starting point if you've never used Photoshop before). Photoshop Lightroom - Professional level image editor for photographers.
The best product for her will depend on what she want to do with it? If she wants to process the photograph (ie modify colours, tones, lighting etc then Lightroom would be a great choice. If she wants to manipulate and intergrate photographs then Photoshop or Photoshop Elements would be what to look for.
It's important to add that Lightroom is seen by most people as a supplement to Photoshop, although it can be used independently. Photoshop is also best for processing RAW files, although it can work with JPEG and TIFF in a non-destructive way.

Thanks for your help Matt,i've seen on youtube you can download these programs for free.
Is this a good idea?? What are the negative's to doing this??
My girlfriend will be taking pictures then manipulating them and just fixing up her old photo's like the light and dark spots in them i think. |

I would buy her any version of Photoshop (7.0 or higher)
and then when she is spending more time on the
computer than with you, buy her Lightroom....it cuts
post processing down by half.... |

If she's going to be processing shadows/highlights/colours/tints/saturation etc, and working with the things I'd consider to be the tools for photographers ie sharpening/noise reduction etc then I'd go for Lightroom. It's also a great utility for organising photographs as well.
Patrick's right, these programs are not free, although if you go to the Adobe website you can download a fully functional 30-day trial to see if it matches your needs.
