Masking really is one of the most important features of PS.
It allows you to add custom transparency to a layer.
If you want to get serious in PS, you need to learn this.
Try tutorials you'll find all over the web to get the idea of layer masking.
Cheers

hi this is my view of what masking is
1. it used in conjunction with your various tools and features to select a object or a area....
2. by desiginating a mask area you can restrict the modifications to just that area..... now in addition to this.... again in conjuction with your vaious select tools and features, yo can mask off a area and cpy it to new layer..
this statement probably explains it better
""""Masks let you isolate and protect areas of an image as you apply color changes, filters, or other effects to the rest of the image. When you select part of an image, the area that is not selected is "masked" or protected from editing. You can also use masks for complex image editing such as gradually applying color or filter effects to an image.""""
you have probably already been doing it and just not realized it that you were masking.... especiallyif you been doing some of the tutorials...
that my view
