I am using elements 7 and photograph in raw. After editing the raw image I create a jpg, saving to the same file as the raw image and its associated xmp file. If I further edit the jpg, elements sends the previous version of the jpg to the recycle bin together with the xmp file, so that if I want to reopen the raw file I have lost the editing information. Is this a glitch, or normal? Is there a way to stop this happening?

Hi Wol,
One possible expedient to your problem is to go to the Camera Raw preference dialog box and choose "Camera Raw Database" in the "Save settings to" drop down menu. By default, it is set to .xmp which can result in problems like corruption so it may be easier to get rid of xmp altogether. |

Thanks for your comments, however the xmp file is not corrupted, just binned. If I return it from the bin, I can open my raw file and the editing is all correct, so elements recognises the xmp is associated with the raw file. What I don't understand is why when altering a jpg copy of the raw file the xmp is binned. Seems crazy. Surely the xmp file should remain associated with the raw file, not be linked to the jpg? If the jpg needs additional info on an xmp (and I am not clear why it should,as all info such as tags etc appears to be incorporated in the jpg), then a new xmp file should be created, but it is not. I will try filing the jpg in a different folder and see if the xmp file still gets binned. This could be a work around if successful, but inconvenient as I like to keep the raw and jpg together. |

That may be a possible workaround, I'm afraid I'm not so familiar with elements 7. My usual workflow is Adobe Lightroom or Camera Raw then importing into Photoshop CS4. I hope you get it working.

I have tried filing the jpg in a different folder, and this seems to overcome the problem, but is messy. If I save the xmp as a 'version set' with the raw file in the organiser all is okay too. The problem only arises if I delete the raw file from the organiser (but not the hard drive). Elements must then think the xmp file is unattached, so it is binned. Not clever. Unless anyone else has any advice, I think I shall leave it at that. Thanks for your comments anyway. |
