This is my first post here and I hope it gets more attention than on the other site I posted it on as I really need some input.

I am not all that new to Photoshop but I still consider myself a noob. My main experience with the program has been mostly enhancing digital photographs. And I have also done some graphics from scratch. Always I have used just a mouse to do whatever I needed to do.

Now, I want to get into doing more with the program and I am contemplating getting a pen and tablet. As I am merely learning at this point, I can't see paying a great deal for a tablet just yet. I have been seeing alot on the Wacom tablets as they seem to be the most prominant. However, I would like to have one that has a decent sized work area and the Wacom is around $300 for a roughly 6x8.

Are there cheaper alternatives that are worth looking at for a "near" beginner like me?

I appreciate any and all input.

Thanks,
Dave

Hi Dave, Welcome to the forums!

I have been using Photoshop for about 6 years now and I happen to have a graphics tablet.

When I was looking to buy one I quickly found that the Wacom tablets are the most popular (and most expensive). I wanted to get one with the same capabilities for a little cheaper but just couldn't justify spending a couple hundred dollars on one. I eventually settled on a very cheap, very basic tablet. It's only 4x5.5 inches and only cost me $45. I know most Photoshop users would never consider buying one that cheap, but It has served me very well and I haven't found a need to upgrade yet. I'm sure someone doing free-hand art would need something larger with more features, but I'm no artist so I haven't needed one.

I hope this helps a little!

I guess it depends a lot.

I also didn't want to buy an expensive tablet at first, so I bought a cheaper one: "Trust Wireless Design & Work 400" which cost me about $100 but it's accuracy and resolution were low, I had a hard time getting pressure sensitivity to work in Photoshop due to bad drivers and whatnot. Also, there were a lot of times when it made my cursor to shake so hard I couldn't even draw straight lines.

One year later I bought "Wacom Intuos 3 Graphics Tablet A5" ($330) and it's perfect.

Bottom line: don't buy a cheap tablet if you want reliability and accuracy, cheap tablets are cheap for a reason.

Thanks kreativkid and nuftsuk for taking time to give me some information. I really do appreciate it.

Anyone else have an opinion? A good alternative?
