I'm not quite sure how to word this, but what I'd like to do is to select the edge of a picture, and then extend the colors that are present in gradient fashion, based on the colors of the pixels at the edge.

For instance, here's a picture of the grand canyon:

How would I extend the left side with gradients that would match the colors of the pixels on the left edge, and all gradiate to black? (I'd blur or something later so that the transition from the picture to the gradient start appeared smoother)

Is what I want, or something like it, possible?

I think I would paste the image into the larger document. Then use the rectangle selection tool and select a 1 pixle rectangle the entire length of a side. Copy that selection to a new layer. Then transform the selection by draging the center handle (on the oustide edge) to the edge of the document.

That wont fill in the corners though. You could make those areas the same color as the corner pixle on the image. Or use a skew transform along the outside edge. It makes for an interesting effect.

Then on a layer above, using the selection of the edge you transformed place a Foreground to Transparent (with black as your foreground color) gradient.

quick and dirty results
