Select the gradient tool. At the top of the screen, make sure the transparency box is checked and then click in the middle of the gradient pulldown.

The Gradient Editor dialog box will open.

Circled in red on the image above are what are called "stops". The ones above the bar are gradient stops. Those below are color stops. You can add as many of each that you want with each having a different transparency or color value. Just click where I have placed the red text to add a new stop and adjust that stops attributes below the bar.

Yea I thought that is how you did it too, but when I click on the stops or the transparancies it still doesn't go transparent. I don't even have a gradient option for half transparent. The only one I have is half black, half white. I can't figure out why i am missing the transparancy one.

Might I mention here something which I have never seen explained? Why do the opacity stops not work in Gradient Map? The color stops do. Any ideas?

I wrote that before I realised the OP had replied.

For AkinaGod: I think the answer to your question might be that you need to click on the left opacity stop and move it slightly to the right. You will see the word "opacity" become highlighted at 100%. You need to adjust that figure downwards; then you will be able to adjust the place where opacity changes. The stops don't create opacity; they adjust it at the place you move them to. Hope this helps.

Have you tried resetting the gradients?

The little black arrow to the left of the OK button.

Click it and select reset. Did that help? Probably not, even if the foreground to transparent wasn't there, you should be able to adjust the transparency stops.

Hate to sound like a broken record, but maybe resetting the preferences will take care of the problem. Shift+Ctrl+Alt while Photoshop loads.

I checked all the settings and messed with a lot. But it was never about oposity, it was about the transparency. I can't find the preset for transparency nor can I create it. I don't understand why not. It works on my buddies computer and all my settings are the same.

I don't wish to prolong this if you don't feel we are gettting anywhere, but I would like to help if possible. I'm puzzeld as to why you see opacity and transparency as different things. If you know better then I am wrong, but Adobe and Deke Mclelland both seem to treat them as the same thing. See page 352 of the CS4 Help manual, where the explanation for creating transparent gradients seem to me to fit in with my explanation. Are you saying that when you lower the opacity level in the gradient editor the bar does not become transparent? If it does , you can create a transparent gradient. The only time the opacity stops don't work at all is in Gradient Map.
