Hello!

I'm trying to understand how layers are prioritized, and my question stems from a tutorial on creating navigational bars for a website.

Now, in this tutorial, the author has created many indented lines that are UNDERNEATH the rounded rectangle with his website signature (TutorialMan). When I try to duplicate this process, the indent lines seem to run right over top of the rounded rectangle, and I can't get them to flow underneath of the rounded rectangle.

Here is a link to the site that shows pictures of the tutorial and my question involves step 7-9.

http://www.tutorialguide.net/navigation_bar_tutorial.html

Can anyone explain how to prioritize the layers so I can get the result of the indented lines UNDERNEATH the rounded rectangle?

Thanks!!!!

One way I would do it, is create a new layer above the indent layer. Create the rounded rectangle, fill it with a color, and then apply the layer styles and effects. If you leave the inside of the rectangle without color, then you'll have transparency which will show everything in the previous layers, such as the indents.

Chris,

Hey, thanks for your response! I was actually typing you a response of why it wasn't working when I tried a new PSD and got it right. I think maybe I missed that the shape layer had an opacity of 33%, but I'm not sure! Anyway, it's working and I appreciate your help.

I have another (maybe) simple question, about moving layers around with the Move Tool. When I created a layer and add Text in the box, it wasn't placed with precision. However, when I try to move it where I want it to be inside the box, my mouse will skip over spots on the screen, like it's jumping instead of allowing me to place it smoothly in position. How can I fix this???

Thanks!!!!!

Quite a few ways to do this. Here's a couple.

One way, with the move tool, click and hold on the text and then hold Ctrl, it should solve jumping issues. Another way is to select the text layer, and use the arrow keys to move it into a precise position. :)
