ScanGear CS preview images appear sharper than in PS

Using ScanGear CS, the software that Canon use to communicate with PS, and the preview images of the final scan appear sharper than the images you get when you close out of ScanGear and are back in PS. In PS, the images appear dull. To get anywhere near the preview image involves heavy use of the Smart Sharpening filter. Is this the case for all scanning software?

Using Canoscan 8400f, magazine colour setting, 300dpi (print). CS3.
