Hi, I'm a newbie! I feel like I am missing something key here. I am using Photoshop to create buttons for a web app. My button is pretty simple -- a round rectangle on a shape layer, with a fill effect, emboss effect, and stroke effect.

I need a whole bunch of buttons which contain different text, and are different widths (depending on the text). Every time I need a new button, I clone the shape layer, resize the rect, add the text, and add a slice.

All works fine, until I decide to re-style the buttons. I cannot figure out how to globally re-style all of the buttons at once (e.g. change all of the fills, or all of the emboss effects, etc). Is there a way to do this?

TIA

Chris

Assuming that they are all in the same document, you can modify one layers style. Then right click on it in the layer pallet and select Copy layer style. Then hold down Ctrl and click each of the layers that you want to update. When you have them all selected, right click on one and select Paste layer style. It will be applied to all the layers you have selected in the layers pallet.

Another option that you could have used depending on your version of PS, is Smart Objects. Read up on them. Handy! In a nutshell, you would have only had to make one button. Turn it into a SO and copy it in your document as many times as needed. Then if you need to edit the button, you edit the SO and the changes automatically apply to all copies of that SO in your document when you save your SO edits.

Regards,
Dave

Dave,

Thank you! That sets me in the right direction.
