OK, the way I have done this in the past might not be the best/fastest, but it works for me.
Select the layer you want to fade out. On the layers pallet, click the little mask button at the bottom. That created a layer mask which you can now edit. Ctrl+A will select all. Select>Modify>Border. Enter a number you think will work. OK.
Select>Modify>Feather. Again, some reasonable number. (You'll have to go through these steps a few times to get it the way you want). OK.
Fill the selection with black. You may not see the effect if you have layers visible below this layer.

Oh! And if you just want it on two sides. Dont worry about the selection. Create a mask. Grab the gradient tool and use a black and white radial gradient on the mask.
Just remember BLACK hides WHITE shows and greys are transparent depending on which end of the black/white spectrum they are on.
