Hi,

I'm trying to make a regular jpeg image look 3d like a canvas print.

I have attached an image to show you what I am trying to achieve.

Is this possible with Photoshop? - if not what programme can I do this with?

Any help would be greatly appreciated !!

Many thanks,

you can do this with PhotoShop, but Illustrator has a much easier way of doing it.

but if you have to use photoshop then you will need to use the "Transform" controls, you will need to change the "Perspective", "scale" and "rotation" of the images.

step 1,
open your image, select your 3 sides for your box. (use the marque tool, and select the front first, go to "layer/New/From Copy" and then do this for the top, and the side)

step 2
with the layer for the front selected, go to "Edit/Transform/Perspective" and change the layer as needed, it might help to have the box image as your background layer so you know what shape you need to create.

step 3
once you have you peices in place select the 3 sides (layers) an go to "Layer/Merge Selected"

step 4
use the clone stamp tool to fill in the edges

step 5
create a new layer at the top of the stack, fill with 50%white/50%Black, or gray, set the blend mode to "Overlay" in the layers pallet.
this should make the layer transparent.

step 6
use the "dodge" tool to create the highlights, and the "burn" tool to create the shadows (note to do your dodging and burning on the gray layer

(Tip) you can draw a straight line with any tool in PS if you click at the start of the line, and "shift/click" at the other end of the line

That should do the trick, I did not work through this process, but if I missed anything, or connfussed you, just pm me.

You can do it with vanishing point. I added the edge highlights on a separate layer after rendering the 3D.

Hi Salvadore,

Thanks for your very detailed response but think I may need your help a little more as I only a novice with photoshop.

In point 2 you say to go to edit/transform/perspective but I don't have that option under the edit header?

Any ideas?

You should have "transform" in the edit menu.
it might be grayed out depending on circumstances. but you should see it mid way down the list.

if it is grayed out, go to "Select/Deselect" then simply click on the layer you wish to transform.

but you should definetly check if you have "Vanishing Point"
it will be in the "Filters" menu, if you do have this filter, then you might check out a tutorial on "Vanishing Point" and that would make it much easier.

Thanks for the tip Hawkeye!

Also, incase you might have Illustrator, it has a nifty 3d filter that makes this a snap as well.

Good luck, and feel free to ask for more help.

Salvadore,

Thanks for your reply again.

I have had another look & I definitely don't have transform under the edit menu. I have even looked through the sub folders within edit & there is nothing there. Did I mention that I am using Elements as I don't know if that makes a difference.

If you say I can do it much easier with Illustrator I may look into getting that. Do you know if I can download a trial version of it?

Thanks for your help.............. so far !!

Ohh Brighteyes,
Yes I would have to guess that it DOES make a difference that you are using elements, but I don't use Elements so I can't be sure.

I would say that just about any program will give you a 30 day trial period, but I don;t know it the 3D filter will be available.

It is worth a try if you wanted to achive this effect.
But if you just need to have it done for a presentation at work, or to impress your co workers, we could talk care of it for you if you posted the image you need wrapped.

Salvadore,

Thanks very much for your offer - I really appreciate it.

Unfortunately I have many of these to do. They are for work but I run it myself so am in no rush.

It looks like I can download a trial version of Illustrator - if I was to do so & all the functions are available would you be kind enough to tell me how to do it in Illustrator?..................please!!

Hi Salvadore,

I've downloaded the 30 day trial of Illustrator & have managed to make my image 3d to an extent.

I've used the 3d effect & have given my object a stroke of 20. The only problem is the side & top of my image have been given a faded grey colour whereas I want my photo to go round the side & top.

Is there a function where I can wrap my photo round the box?
