Not my bag really but invention is the mother of neccesity and all that.... 
Don't know if you are interested in experimenting more fruitfully with filters to produce effects but you might be interested in photo art and the various applications of it -
www.retouchpro.com/forums/index.php - you can surf without registering, look in the photo art section.
heres another link for tutorials that include filters, I have to say even I am fond of this bloke and his skill with filters -
