I use clipping masks for a lot of the stuff that i do in photoshop and just noticed something that had me stumped.

Say i were to paint a white smoke cloud or something as part of my artwork, then put a hue/saturation adjusment layer above everything in the stack and colorize it to a certain value. The white smoke cloud and everything below would be affected, but if I create a clipping mask of that adjustment layer for the white smoke cloud only, the colorize effect no longer works.

I was just wondering if anyone could tell me why this happens?

I can get round it by not using a clipping mask and instead applying the cloud layer into the mask of the unclipped adjustment but its a bit long winded. Am i misunderstanding the use of clipping masks in this instance?
