How do i create White to Transparent gradient on another a new layer and apply to my work which already has a colored background?

Create a new layer. Select white for the foreground color and select the foreground to transparent gradient in the options bar.

I tried and it doesn't work .. maybe i'm doing it wrong =S and also how do i get white? I can't seem to find it , the closest i can get is like a off white.

I don't know if this works in CS2 (been a while since I used it) but in CS4 you press D, it will set your foreground and background colours to black and white.

Yea it works and i've tried that but it white is not pure white=S
I've checked the code for white and tried it and it still display the same off white.
