To get the stripes at the start of Hawkeyes method, you could create a square (dimensions your own choice, I suggest 40px), then on a new layer create a vertical stripe 20px wide and position it starting at 10px from the left edge, this should create a stripe in the middle of the square. Define this as a pattern for future ease of use. Obviously dimensions can be changed to suit needs.
