				Hi there,

I've recently been bought an slr camera for christmas which i wanted as i'm really into photography, and i was wondering whether photoshop would be a good investment? What are your thoughts on photoshop cs4? Is it complicated, and if so, is it so complex that i would need to attend courses etc? I've seen tutorials on youtube mainly and i've managed to follow most of the advice.

I want it for image retouching to make my pictures look more professional and maybe design when i get the hang of it.

Lastly, any tips on where to purchase ( i don't mean illegal copies) can it only be bought from adobe direct or are there any other business that sell it at a better price?

Is there a cs5 coming out soon? Someone advised me to wait until the new version is out. |

Speaking from personal experience your first choice 'Very user-friendly - can learn easily' is incorrect. You should start with option 2 and then include Steep learning curve - but stick with it and you will learn it over a period of months. Then follow it with your option 3. |

For most users, Photoshop Elements is more than enough for photo editing and more. It's, also considerably cheaper than CS4. |

Photoshop took me years to learn. I have been using it for 7 years or so, and only now do I consider myself very versatile with it. That's a really long time, and I doubt it takes anyone else that long, but I was never using it full-time. Now that I do use it full-time, I'm still learning new methods and ideas every day.

If you're going into photographu, graphics and art, then it's all there really is to work with. There's Corel Painter (which I also recommend) and Adobe Illustrator (I don't know anything about it), but Photoshop is the program you are definitely going to need, so buy it.

And then give yourself a few years to become a 'professional' user. I use CS3, but I assume CS4 is the same, only with a few extra gadgets and stuff. |
