Using photoshopt elements 6, I want to create a file for printing on a shirt. I'd like to use a collegiate athletic style where the shirt color will show through an oval as the text color. I am trying to figure out how to cut out the text I've typed so my background shows through.

I don't use Elements, but one of your text tool options should be the type mask tool.
Type what you want on the layer and commit the text. You'll have a selection of the type, now hit delete.

I presume Elements 6 has a Mask Type Tool in the toolbar. If you select it instead of the regular type tool and position in where ever you want to cut out your text in the image and just type your word(s). Next, hold down CTRL and C to copy to clipboard, then open your new document and hold down CTRL and V to paste the selection in.
