I am in the process of creating a design and I am trying to replicate two things and I am not sure where to begin. I found a logo that has some features I would like to incorporate into my design but needed some direction.

Here is the link to the logo it is Entry #197 (1st image on left on the 1st Row)

1. I noticed that they used what looks to be white lighting around the design and it gets darker towards the left and right. I am not sure how to accomplish something similar on my work.

2. I would like to add a similar shape (the shape right about the word Netopia). Is this something that they created from scratch and can if so how would I accomplish?

I have only been using Photoshop for a short time and really need some help on this.

#1 Is called a gradient

#2 Yes they likely did create it frome scratch. If I were doing it I'd probably use the pen tool.

hawkeye is correct, the background is a gradient, probably a radial gradiant that starts in the top third of the image.

The graphic elements probably started off flat and were transformed using the free transform tool, one one each layer. Then on a third layer a shadow was added below to create the illusion that they are floating.

There are a few ways that this could have been created. Even in #D inside PS if you have the extended version.
