|
|
I love learning to make collages but I notice a consistent pattern in my work that I don't like. I have hard, sharp edges in several of my layers that don't look attractive! The attached, is not the only collage that looks off in this way.
Have tried various blur ideas: the blur tool (though I don't understand the idea of what it does for you to select with the marque before brushing), Guassian (sp?) blur and also just a variety of opacity in the layers.
Have also tried just different sized brushing along the edges, cropping, and gradients. I'm not getting there. And I also watched and tried the tutorial ideas in this quick mask tutorial to feather a portion of the selection - http://www.planetphotoshop.com/taking-advantage-of-quickmask.html
It may be that one of these ideas is the right one but I'm not going after it far enough. I think the challenge is that I'm not sure WHAT I'm trying for I just know the edges look too hard and sharp. Or am I just grouping the wrong kinds of photos?

I'm a Photoshop newbie. Just finished my first PShop community college class, using the "Class in a Book" by Adobe that I recommended to another newbie in this forum. Mac running OSX, PS (4) version 11 |

It's difficult to help without an example of what you're trying to accomplish. But, if you don't want a hard edge...
Using any of the manual selection tools, you can feather the selection edges from the toolbar options at the top of the screen. Or using quick mask and blur, as the tutorial indicated.
As for your question, when you select with the marque any changes you make will be confined to the selection area only. |

Photoshop CS4 has made it easier for beginners to create soft edges.
All you have to do is:
1. Create the selection
2. Click the mask button at the bottom of your layers palette to make a mask based on this selection
3. Move the feather slider in the mask panel. |
