I've got a series of about 4 different constant problems with CS.

the worst: lately it won't start, gives me a "Could not initialize due to a program error."

I've re-installed for the millionth time, deleted shortcuts, etc. No matter what I do, it won't come up. For this computer I'm running XP, pentium 4, 2.80ghz, 3gb ram, NVIDIA Gforce 4 MX 440 card. This started 4 days ago.

Second, is with presets. I constantly have to click the preset whenever I change tools. Am I doing something wrong? shouldn't there be a way to set this to stay? This is slowing my production time down like crazy.

Any help is appreciated!

A few possible causes:

- messed up installation (note that Photoshop's uninstall doesn't remove all files/settings, some you need to remove manually)
- damaged video driver (uninstall/reinstall with latest)
- damaged hard drive (do a surface scan, check number of failing sectors)
- program conflict (cancel all non-Windows processes in task manager and try again)
- bad memory (run memtest86+ at night for at least 2 full cycles: http://www.memtest.org/ )
- virus

Did you try resetting your preference file, because I doubt it's being deleted during an uninstall. Also try to go back in time 4 days... did you install something, did you have an update, do you have other issues since that day with other applications, etc.

I've taken care of all of it except for the memtest. I'll try that, thanks.
