I am trying to have this grey box over the background on my site, but white shows up around the image. It is a .PNG image. I'm not sure how to get rid of the area. I'm using sliced images and put them together to make the box.

Its most likely because you have saved it as a PNG-8 with indexed colour with turned all of your semi transparent pixels into solids.
Make sure next time you save if its PNG-8 to use either of the three transparency dithers.
