Has anyone tried this tutorial before? I am using CS5 and it seems that I wasn't the only one having problems getting the image to look right in the layer mask. The author doesn't really explain too well on how to get things to look right. As soon as I got the "adding the image to the layer mask" part, I was completely lost. I managed to get the image to copy into it and then when I inverted the image it was too white and wasn't showing up that great. Can anyone take a look and see maybe explain the layer masking steps a little further in detail? Thank you.

When you ALT-Click on a layer mask, you'll get the layer mask taking up the whole screen. The bits you paint in black will be hide the pixels in the layer, the bits you paint in white will show the pixels in the attached layer. If you Invert it, then what's hidden becomes visible and vice versa.
Sometimes it's easier to just click on the layer mask and draw on it directly (using black and white) because you can see immediately what's being hidden or revealed.
So (sorry I don't have more time, I might have misread) what I think they are askig you to do is:
- make a black and white selection of the face
- use ctrl-c to copy it
- make a layer mask over the pretty paint
- alt click on the layer mask so that it takes up the whole screen
- ctrl-v to paste the black and white face into the layer mask (then swap/invert the black and white)
- click back on another layer to see how your black and white face "masks" the pretty paint.

Thanks! That helped out a lot. I had to make a few adjustments. I think I was running into problems bc I was using a different picture than the one in the tutorial, but I got it to work with your help. Thank you! |
