ok. ive starting learning about how photoshop will damage your image if you dont use non destructible layers. I understand the main core of this but im still trying to understand working with it and just wanted a little help.
Ok so ive edited the levels of a photo using an adjustment layer but what i dont understand is how after ive adjusted the level of the overall photo how do i make a selection within the photo ive just edited and edit the level sticking with the non destructible method? using a P.C btw
I hope this makes sense.
Ive been using this

If you wish to only adjust the levels on part of the image, you use the layer mask. Paint with black on the mask to conceal, white to reveal. |

hi
this is just to add...
generally you think about the sequence of doing things ie; workflow... depending on what your trying to do... some steps are done before others...
possibly you would, like hawkeye mentioned , you would make your selection first and apply a mask and then apply aadjustment level.. |

hi,
you might find this tutorial of interest.
it involves a many tools and effectswhich is applicable in many projects..
you might want to look at the overall workflow
when things are done.. such as in the tutorial when selections are made, when masks are involved and when applying blends and also clipping . http://www.rnel.net/tutorial/Photoshop/12838 |

Thanks jerry Ill check that out tonight.
Also.. I been doing alot of touch Ups and tweaks on people..i watched a very in detail tutorial it was about 40mins , it was v good but the comments completely slated the guy for not using this non destructive method. How important is this method . Can you still work in a professional manner with using this technique ? |

There is simply no disadvantage to using non-destructive editing, the opposite cannot be said. The other way is like doing a crossword puzzle with an ink pen. |

Ha! dead on hawkeye. If there is an opportunity to use non destructive techniques, why would you not use them? _________________ If life serves you lemons, make lemonade! |

hi,
well the short answer is yes you can, HOWEVER ...
it can cost you time and a lot of extra work and aggravation.. ..
example... if you applied let say several effect directly to a image and then you find one of the effects didn't work out... you have to start over...
a lot of time wasted....
where as if you non distrutive idea,,, if a effect doesnt work out then you only have to redo that one effect and not completely start over...
the old ways was to just make a duplicate of a layer everytime you made change and that can get tedius... smiling...
on cloning... I generally will work with a blank layer and put what i am cloning onto that... that way if i mess up it just the blank layer and not the image itself ..
you have other different ways for exampe you have the adjustment layers, you can use masks, also using smart filters... that very popular..smiling ... also grouping layers can help help in this way..
when ever possible, and sometime it just not possible , you want to use non distructive meathods .... definitely for a professional, saves time, overall faster, saves money and it less aggravation... smiling ... it gives alotof flexabilty that you don't have with distructive meathods ... |
