Well, I have told my client my concern with the logo. Especially how the phrase is wrapped around the star image. If they were to use that logo on a business card it would be hard to read. But, it's their money.
I did what the recent guy posted which was went into blended options and turned down the white. Worked great. I hope to get that png file from them soon for the final editing.

Open up your image.
Change it from the background layer to a normal one.
Duplicate it once.
Desaturate and invert the duplicate layer.
Select the entire layer and cut or copy it.
Go back to your original layer and add a layer mask, click the layer mask thumbnail.
Go to the channels tab and select the mask channel and turn on channel visibility.
Paste into this channel, use edit > levels to emphasize the mask contrast.
Because the file is a jpg the artifacts in the image these will show up on darker backgrounds, see below.
