I have a very basic question, a lot of time when I'm searching art works on the web I see psd files that contains more then one element. (for example a grid of icons)

Now usually I need only one element, so how do I create a png from the one that I need? How can I isolate it from the rest of the elements?

It's not the easiest question to answer.

If your PSD contains more than one layer and your element is contained on that layer then it is a case of Image>Trim>Transparent...

or

turn off the eye icon in the layers palette to only make visible the layer containing the element. Drag and drop it to a new canvas if you like or Ctrl+Shift+Alt+S for save for web and save it as a PNG.

What would help clarify is a screenshot.

There are many different ways to achieve this. What I usually do is duplicate the layer to a new document. The easiest way to do this is to right click on the layer and choose duplicate layer. In the duplicate layer dialog box under destination choose new and give your document a name. Click ok. Then if necessary choose trim under the image menu. Then go to file/save for web and devices to save it in a file format of your choice.
