I thought this would be a very helpful topic for beginners. Looking at a bookstore or online for books on Photoshop can be daunting, there are literally hundreds of different books.

A few I really like that go into Photoshop are:

Adobe Photoshop 7.0 Classroom in a Book

Robin Williams Design Workshop

Robin Williams Web Design Workshop

Anyone else have any favorites?

Adobe Press' Classroom in a Book series is pretty good. I've also used Photoshop 5.5 WOW book (never bought the 6.0 and 7.0 editions), which discusses some quick and easy ways to create awsome effects.

It's also pretty easy to find photoshop books for older versions than 7, at a local library. Out of date, but perfect for learning the basics. Anything is good when its free, right? ;)

How about Foundation Photoshop 6 by Friends of ED?

I have New Masters of Photoshop by Friends of ED and it's amazing.

I bought this book and found it very, very useful.

Inside Photoshop 7

Actually, I think the "Inside" series is pretty good for any product.

but in my experience the books are far too basic. I'm basically self taught and i've been using PS since version 3. I know a majority of techniques and tricks i've learned have been either through trial and error or checking out a number of tutorials offered on the particular subject your going for at the moment, (ie. cartoon, photorealism, web ...etc). The web can be very informative at times, just do a little research (i prefer using google to do most my websearches) and you might be surprised at what you find.
