... but offset is cumbersome when it comes to patterns that have a large number of very different elements. For example, I am working on a design for a fabric that has 40+ different illustrations, and it is a huge pain in the neck to have to flatten everything and offset each time I move a single element around on my canvas to improve the pattern.
Is there any way to SET UP a canvas explicitly for repeat? That is to say, create a setting such that when part of a design element hangs off a side of the canvas (e.g. top, bottom, left, or right), rather than just cutting off, it automatically carries over onto the opposite side (e.g. if the design element hangs off the bottom, the part that hangs off would just continue into the TOP of the canvas)??
Repeating patterns are always a pain.
Canvas grids with the snapping enabled are your friend.
Don't flatten your elements. Just keep all layers of an individual element in a group folder.

'Flower' element in its own group folder. You want it up the top. Use move tool to drag it up to snapping point up the top.
Then duplicate the elements folder and drag the new 'flower' down the bottom and snap to the right point.
If you know how html code make a website with a tiled background of your pattern. Working on your psd file, make changes, save for web, refresh webpage and your see your changes.
