Hello:

I've just started learning CS5 and I have a question about merging layers. Suppose I have layer A above layer B. To merge the two layers I select both layers and hit Ctrl+E. The layers are then merged with the resultant layer being called A. What if I want the resultant layer to be called B? It is really a bunch of trouble to keep renaming all the A layers to B. I hope this question makes sense.

Is there some way I can "select" the B layer before merging so that when A and B are merged the resultant layer will automatically be called B instead of A?

Thanks in advance.

Larry

Move layer B above layer A and then merge them.

Thanks, Frank1263:

Well, that's not appropriate for me in all situations. Let A = image border on a transparent layer. Let B = image. When I merge, I get "border" as the layer name. What I want to get is the name of the image.

If I do as you suggest, all I'll see is the image with no border, since the image and border are the same size.

Any more suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

Do it once and then make an action for it, or create a macro for batching. How? Not really in my remit, the net should be able to provide more info, or our august members here :)

Oh and welcome to the forum.

Thanks, thehermit:

You say, "our august members here should be able to provide more info." OK, I'll just wait until August to get an answer to my question. (lol)

Seriously, I spent a lot of time looking on the net -----> NOTHING!!! NADA!!!

I've ordered the book, "CS5 for Dummies", and since I definitely fall into that category, I think it will be of some help.

This post is just a little FYI. I tried a bunch of things and finally came up with a solution to my problem. So, if anyone else has this question, you all can have some info for them.

Let layer 1 be above layer 2 in the layers palette. Layer 1 = 1 pixel border on a transparent layer. Layer 2 = background image. Layers 1 and 2 are the same size.

1 -- select both layers
2 -- create a clipping mask: Alt+mouse click in-between the 2 layers in the layers palette
3 -- select just one of the layers (it doesn't matter if it's 1 or 2)
4 -- merge the layers: Ctrl+E
5 -- the resultant layer will have the same name as layer 2

As I explained in my first post, if both layers are selected before merging, the merged layer will have the same name as layer 1.

Thank you, Larry, for solving my problem.
You are very welcome, Larry. It was a pleasure doing business with you. If you need any more help, you know where to find me. I'll be available 24/7.
(lol)
