I want students to create different parts of a character (head, middle and legs/feet) and mix and match them. Is there an easy was to do this?

imagemaker just select whatever part of the image you want to use
& mask it. It will then only use whatever part of the image you have selected
& you can refine edge & edit the selected part however you like. And to join them together do the same thing for the next image, & then move them to the same project you're working on and so on.
